Harvard University is known worldwide as a highly prestigious university. To begin with, eight U.S. presidents, including the last two, George W. Bush and Barack Obama, have a Harvard diploma. It is also the oldest institution of higher learning in the U.S.

Harvard was founded in 1636 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, just 16 years after the first British colonists settled not far from the area. It takes its name from John Harvard, who on his death in 1638 donated a substantial library and half his fortune to the newly founded school.

Harvard’s famous symbol, a shield with the Latin word, Veritas, which means “truth,” was first sketched in 1644. Interestingly, it was forgotten for nearly two centuries until Harvard’s president, Josiah Quincy, found it when he happened to be digging through old records. He displayed the image on a banner for Harvard’s bicentennial in 1836, and it has been an official symbol for the university since 1843.

 Crimson, the deep red color so closely associated with Harvard, didn’t become the university’s official color until 1910. The story begins in 1859 with athletes Charles Eliot and Benjamin Crowninshield. To be better seen, these members of Harvard’s rowing team wore crimson scarves so spectators could tell Harvard’s boat from the others during the races. In 1869, Eliot became Harvard’s president, and when he retired 40 years later, the university made crimson the official color in his honor.

Four centuries ago, Harvard University had only 12 students and one teacher. Today, Harvard’s enrollment of over 20,000 dwarfs those original numbers.
